A Simple and Flexible Tablature System
The Dulcimer Hymnal uses a double-staff notation system that makes hymn playing accessible and lets musicians of many backgrounds play together. That makes it a natural fit for the family music-making and church gatherings of the Christmas season.
The upper staff uses traditional treble clef notation, so any C instrument can play the melody. Chord symbols above the music let guitarists, mandolin players, hammered dulcimer players, and other accompanying musicians play along.
The lower staff is written specifically for the mountain dulcimer. Instead of a traditional bass clef or key signature, it shows the instrument’s tuning and gives fret numbers for exactly where each note is played.
Beginning players can follow the tablature, and experienced musicians can see the melody, chords, and structure of each carol.
